Tragedy, Triumph and the Fairy Flag- and the Photographer!!

Tragedy, Triumph and the Fairy Flag- and the Photographer!!
Bench in the shade of Trumpan Church, Waternish Peninsula, Skye, Scotland
In 1578 the MacDonalds of Uist arrived by boats, under cover of the fog and locked the congregation of MacLeods in the church, setting fire to the roof. All but one perished. The alarm was raised and the MacLeods killed all the invaders in the Battle of the Spoling Dyke. It is said they were able to exact revenge on the MacDonalds when they unfurled and waved the MacLeod Fairy Flag.

There are several legends regarding the origin of the flag, one of which was that it was a gift to an infant child of a MacLeod Chieftan, and yet another was that it was given to a MacLeod chieftain by his fairy lover when she had to return home. Another suggests it was a gift from Titania, the wife of Oberon the fairy king. It was said that once the flag had been unfurled three times the magic, the flag and the holder of the flag would disappear forever.

And we keep on fighting and making up stories about it ... sadly, we haven't evolved much above our tribal past.

Thank you very much Pam. The clan warfare may have been bloody but the legends are a delight. There is even a fairy bridge at Waternish where the MacLeod chieftain is said to have bid farewell to his fairy lady. Some stories say this is where she gave him the flag promising to come to his rescue on three occasions when it was unfurled.

Mit seiner roten, somit heldenhaften. Jacke gibt er einen guten Kontrast zu dem steinernen Gebäude in der kargen Landschaft, Carol.

The saturated colors are so beautiful! Thank you for the wonderful legends. One of my regrets is that when I was young I had 3 chances to enjoy such sights (when I had spent short periods of time in England for training in various things) but was too stupid to avail myself of that.

I do like the Faerie Queen's song from this Blackmore's Night inspiring your beautiful composition... Which, what will i say?, seems to me to be as much a product of Monthy Python as of a true historical re-enactment! Which I appreciate just as much: as an infectious dynamic! :-))
