Dieser Pilze stinkt mir ... This mushroom stinks ...

... even at a great distance. However, this only applies to the common stinkhorn (Phallus impudicus), which emits a disgusting carrion odour. This odour attracts all kinds of flies, which eat the sugary spore mass at the tip of the mushroom. These insects excrete the spores and spread them around the neighbourhood. The German Mycological Society declared the stinkhorn mushroom the mushroom of the year in 2020. The photo was taken in a mixed deciduous forest.

cammino club has replied to Armando Taborda club"In addition to the carrion odour of the stinkhorn, the fruiting bodies, which resemble a male mating organ, are particularly striking. The appearance of the stinkhorn has always had a somewhat disreputable connotation. Charles Darwin's daughter Henrietta is even said to have removed and burnt the obscene fungus because of the morality of girls everywhere."
