Die Stadt Augsburg besaß seit der Römerzeit eine Befestigung. Im Mittelalter entstanden neue Mauern mit Tuermen und Graeben. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts begann die Entfestung der Stadt und damit der Abbruch vieler Bauwerke der Befestigung. Bis in die Gegenwart hinein sind fünf Stadttore, vier Bastionen und lange Abschnitte der Stadtmauer erhalten geblieben. Quelle: Wikipedia

The de-fortification of the city began in the mid-19th century, and with it the demolition of many fortifications.
