Die Kirche St. Jakob (auch Jakobskirche) ist der historische Mittelpunkt der Jakobervorstadt. Sie ist eine wichtige Station auf dem Augsburger Jakobsweg und war seit dem Mittelalter Sammelpunkt der Jakobspilger auf dem Weg nach Santiago de Compostela.
Um 600 n.Chr. stand an der Stelle der heutigen Kirche erstmals eine hölzerne Jakobskapelle, die 1080 niederbrannte. 1348/1355 wurde eine neue Kirche aus Stein gebaut.
St. Jakob öffnete sich 1521 der Reformation und wurde 1525 die erste evangelische Kirche Augsburgs. Anfang des 19. Jahrhunderts diente die Kirche zeitweise als Scheune. Seit 1827 wurden in ihr wieder Gottesdienste abgehalten.
Bei den Luftangriffen auf Augsburg im Jahr 1944 wurde die Kirche zerstört. 1949 begann der Wiederaufbau, der sich in Teilen bis 1963 hinzog.

The St. Jakob/St. James church is the historical center of the "Jakobervorstadt" (Jacob's suburb). It's an important stop on the Pilgrimage of Santiago de Compostela in Augsburg and has been a gathering point for the pilgrims since the Middle Ages.
Around 600 AD for the first time, a wooden Jacob's chapel stood on the site of today's church and burned down in 1080. In 1348/1355 a new stone church was built.
St. Jakob/St. James opened to the Protestant Reformation in 1521 and became the first Protestant church in Augsburg in 1525. At the beginning of the 19th century, the church was temporarily used as a barn. Worship services have been held there again since 1827.
The church was destroyed in the air raids on Augsburg in 1944. Reconstruction began in 1949 and continued in parts until 1963.
