Windows & Doors Behind The Big Church

A little chapel behind Center Street Congregational Church which itself whitely dominates the skyline of Machias Maine. More than a religious building, the main church structure is a community center for a variety of functions, including The Downeast Blueberry Festival every August.

Questionable maintenance and renovation skills; but a new window frame has been installed.

Lacrosse Face-Off

19 Feb 2020 7 4 110
(Or: hey, can we see what you guys have in there?) (Most photos of lacrosse face-offs are generally just dominated by, well, a player's backside; but hopefully this one is an improved variation on that theme.) In a lacrosse game, play starts with a face-off (at the beginning of each period, and after every goal) and certain rules must be followed to ensure fairness by each player. It seems like a lot of officials/referees in a small area, but in a few seconds one official will back off about 15 meters and the other will stay closer to observe the face-off technique. (Hood College, in white, versus Shenandoah College.) Lacrosse was developed hundreds of years ago by North American First Peoples as an alternative to war, generally in the area of what now is western New York, and they called it baggataway or tewaarathon. It was named "lacrosse" by French Catholic missionaries who thought the deer-hide and wooden implements carried by competing warriors looked like "the cross" carried by penitents on their way to Mass.

1) Does this shirt make my belly look big? ... or ... 2) Some of them may look out-of-shape, but they ran up-and-down the field the whole game.

Dune Fence Receding Away

20 Oct 2019 22 15 139
On the narrow barrier islands of the U.S. East Coast, preserving the fragile dunes is a constant battle against the encroaching waves. Hurricanes and Nor'easters wreak destruction, eroding the dunes and sometimes over-washing them. Lath fences, dune grass plantings, and salt-resistant evergreens help hold the sand in place. Sometimes heavy equipment is used to rebuild dunes. And where commercial and residential structures are built nearly to the beach: after storms, huge dredges pump sand from under the breaking waves to rebuild beaches and dunes. (Bigger and more frequent storms along with rising sea levels, both caused by global warming, may yet reshape this entire coastline.)

Cruising Past the EB Buoy

13 Jul 2011 10 3 295
The EB Bell Buoy at Bass Harbor Head marks the beginning of a narrow 14-foot-deep passage between a shallow rocky ledge and the headland with the lighthouse. ("Marinas.com" says a channel depth of 14 feet/4.25 meters ... but also to consider is that the tidal rise/fall is about 10 or 12 feet/3+ meters in this area, so if a boater is unsure of depth then better stay in the marked channel.) This shallow-draft vessel is probably safe anyway. And this boat owner is either a wordsmith or an entomologist: this vessel is named Balboata, which a Genus of butterflies (so maybe a lepidopterist). Aboard the "Young Guns" lobster fishing boat leaving Cutler Maine harbor. "Young Guns" alludes to the concept: "old guys better get out of the way; another generation of lobster fishermen is coming along". The "WA" emblem on the ballcap is for Washington Academy, a private secondary (high school) founded in 1792 in East Machias Maine.
