Sheppards' Barton ~ Frome

Sheppards' Barton ~ Frome
It seems that this is probably an old mangle, or some kind of 'press'. The name on it is Godwin Warren Fry & Co of Bristol, but I haven't been able to find out anything about them.

Istvan Farkas, Erhard Bernstein, Jocelyne Villoing, Andrea Ertl and 39 other people have particularly liked this photo

I love the colour contrast, Rosa, between the red flowers and the green mangle. Cheers, Joe

Yes, it could be a mangle Joe. That was my first thought, but whatever it is, it has been made good use of now. I have seen a lot of cider presses now supporting flowers....well, this is Somerset. LoL! Cheers, Rosa.

A wonderful image with lovely warm colours Rosa,
I remember the company, but they produced so many things, the fact it is portable is interesting,

Thank you Roger. So the company would have made this, rather than have used it themselves? I am so pleased that you remember the company. Many thanks for the information.

I love this photo Rosa...........so bright and colourful, with oodles of amazing detail. I like the red flowers and the green leaves match the colour of the press/mangle perfectly. The light is gorgeous. A fantastic find and shot!

I'd say this was probably a press of some sort, given the screw-down thingy on the top, but I'm only guessing. I've found a little bit about their business:

Thank you so much Keith. So the firm was a wholesale ironmongers them. Thanks very much for the link. You did well to find it. All I could find was one photo which didn't mention the trade.

This wall was at the end of the street and I couldn't wait to get to it! I love finding things like the old press/mangle :-)

Hi Rosa
A wonderful and interesting picture, which I like very much!
Very nice composition of the two contrasting objects against the wall.
I did a bit of digging, but couldn't find much either
Best Wishes, HWW, a nice week ahead, and stay safe!!
Peter

I can say a bit about Henry Fry..
Henry trained as an accountant, but did not follow his father’s profession but bought a partnership in the iron and tinplate firm of Godwin, Warren, Fry & Co., Redcliffe Street, Bristol. . However, after 18 years with the firm all was not well as on 28 Oct 1903 the partnership between James Colthurst Godwin, Robert Hall Warren & Henry was dissolved.

I sure it's a mangle my wife had a damaged finger that had been in one of those Google mangle machine go to images the first one is very similar having it on castors seems to be a bit rare, the quince is late flowering mine is over, I hope you have had a nice day Good night

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Peter Castell club
There must have been a lot of damaged fingers back in the day! This small back yard is very sheltered Peter, so probably why the flowers are late. Happy Thursday.

Beautiful image and rugged wall backdrop. HWW Best wishes.

May be Oxford or Cambridge should realize it is not found in the search, they could not the needful, they can dig deep in older information.

However here is a link archives.bristol.gov.uk/records/39864/2/496

May be this is the same company

I remember seeing a mangle in my great grandfather's garage some time ago. I understand that they were normally used by young widows with children and the local community would use the facility regularly, partly as a form of charity..
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Andy Rodker club
That was an interesting find Andy. I know at Kingston Lacy House, the wash house was in a yard and they had about 12 mangles there. What an awful job that must have been in the cold and wet and having to iron pure cotton!

What a charming image Rosa. I remember my nan having a mangle, - memories. I did have a look and it looks very much like a mangle listed at auction as a Crown Jewel Green Mangle by Godwin Warren and Co. Limited.
