View from the Turkish Tent

View from the Turkish Tent
Looking east along the valley at Painshill Park, at Cobham in Surrey,

Above the Five Arch Bridge in the centre is the Grotto and at the top of the lake is the Gothic Temple. The latter two both being follies.

Painshill was created by the Hon. Charles Hamilton between 1738 and 1773. Hamilton was a painter, plantsman and a brilliantly imaginative designer. He wanted to create a romantic landscape to stimulate the senses and emotions of visitors.

Thanks, Don. Just one of many stunning views in this park, but this is arguably the best.

That would be JCB buckets! To think this was all done by hand, some 200 years before JCBs were invented. Amazing!

It seems to me that Hamilton's aim for the landscaping was achieved brilliantly. Such a marvellous design which seems to have withstood the test of time..!!

You've captured it perfectly Neil in all it's beauty! Very, very, nice indeed.

I totally agree with your fine words about Hamilton, Keith. It has not always looked so good though. I read somewhere that for most of the last century the park fell into disarray and became overgrown through neglect. In 1981 the Painshill Park Trust was founded as a registered charity and restoration of the park began.
I'm pleased you like the results and I do appreciate your very generous words.....and the valuable time you allocated to the comments.

Many thanks, Jaap. The park is only open to the public at weekends and if I had left it another week I'm sure there would have been more colour on offer. I couldn't trust the weather though...

Fantastic place, your photo does it justice! For a very brief moment I thought this was Stourhead;-)

Thank you, Gudrun. I have never been to Stourhead, but if is half as interesting as Painshill, then it surely must be worth a visit!

That is some beautiful park where you spend your time, one place I would dearly love to visit were it nearer.

I have only been there for the one visit....so far. A great pity you do not live on the other side of the great city, or I would pick you up one weekend and give you the tour..

Serenly beautiful, in large part because of the excellent composition.

Indeed it is, George. I feel guilty for not visiting it before. It is only half an hour's drive away from here and I'd never heard of it until a few weeks ago.

The main difference being this place seems to get more sun than Stourhead ;-)
