Southsea Castle and Lighthouse

Southsea Castle and Lighthouse
Taken last Tuesday during a walk along the sea front. It rained on and off throughout the day, but there were some nice sunny periods too. This was captured during one of them.

The castle was built for Henry VIII in 1544. The fortress defended against invasion from France and the Holy Roman Empire. It also defended the approaches to the Solent and the Royal Naval base at Portsmouth.

The castle was significantly restored in the 1820s. During the refurbishment, a lighthouse was built at the castle at the request of the Admiralty. It was sited on a gun platform and built into the outer wall.

A very pretty vista, Keith! The lighthouse doesn´t quite match the castle though!

Thanks very much Stephan..............glad you like it. The lighthouse was built nearly 300 years after the castle, so it's not surprising it doesn't match :-))

Ah yes, a veiw I know well. I always think that the castle and lighthouse are an odd combination that work rather well. Nicely captured.

I guessed you'd recognise this view Ed. Considering the lighthouse was added nearly 300 years afterwards, I'm surprised at how well they do go together.

Glad you like this shot........and thanks for your visit.

Nice one Keith, the info on the lighthouse is interesting too, it explains why the unusual location on the wall. Proposed Pam's group, she misses lighthouses now that she lives so far away from her beloved Cornwall...

Thank you for your visit and nice comments Dinish. You're very kind.

The castle is now a museum, open to the public and has a gift shop and popular café too. Both are very popular tourist attractions which brings money into the city!

The lighthouse may look surprising on that fortress, but the bench on the right, higher than the wall, is no less surprising! Belated HFF, Keith!

Keith Burton club has replied to Dimas Sequeira club
Thanks for your visit and comments Dimas..........much appreciated.

The bench is sitting on the top of a long grassy slope which runs from the castle walls down towards the sea front.
