this photo by John FitzGerald

I'm fascinated by grids but I don't know why. Perhaps it was years of staring at computer screens displaying SPSS data files. Or maybe my near-lifelong obsession with crosswords. Or maybe I was attracted to crosswords and data analysis by an unconscious obsession with grids. Know thyself my bum.

This one brings to mind a parallelogram honeycomb, if that makes any sense at all.

Well, yes, it does, Bob. Maybe I fear bees, Although I wasn't stung until my 30s, and then I got the stinger out quickly. It was annoying for the day but not fearsome.

Another fascinating abstract image John..........this time it's the black, empty spaces that caught my eye particularly.

Thanks, Keith. George and Gudrun have an idea about the black spaces below.

Morse code.............I was a radio operator in a previous life and used to be able to read morse code......but it never occurred to me in this context and I can't see it to be honest, but who knows?

Many people think of photographs as something to be deciphered, Keith. Morse code woud seem more appropriate for literature, though.

I'm not obsessive about crosswords, but enough of a wordler to have really enjoyed the ultimate crossword movie, Wordplay www.imdb.com/title/tt0492506

I really enjoyed it, too, Sarah. My kind of people. Better solvers. though. After I saw it I took the sample crossword at the the tournament website and took about twice as long to solve the puzzle as the average tournament player.

Yep, I will never be that good (or fast) but I still enjoy it. And I console myself with the thought that I am probably a better haiku poet than any of them.

An intriguing grid, John. I wonder if the black spaces could be morse?

Gudrun agrees with you, George. I also recalled that it may have been inspired by a piano keyboard on the cover of one of Kenny Drew's Bluenote albums.

I also had the morse impression, or some cyphers- in any case it gets your imagination going:-)

I'd forhotten there are ciphers that use grids, Gudrun. Thanks. Ab I mentioned to George, I recalled that it may have been inspired by a piano keyboard on the cover of one of Kenny Drew's Bluenote albums.
