this photo by John FitzGerald

I like this best in full-screen view (click the pic, then click the frame that appears at top right).

Your opinion may vary.

There's another view of the instrument in the PiP at top left.

This seems to fit into the mold of some of the 1920s music - Mosolov maybe? Gold and green glorification of the mechanical world that will elevate mankind beyond it's animal nature? Yeah, sure. It IS a rather powerful image, despite my snide remarks.

Thanks, Bob. Lewis Wickes Hine's steamfitter, or rather the boiler or whatever it is that he's working on, came to mind after I'd cropped the original -- same period, same subject. So Hine + gilt.

I'm not sure what this object is John, perhaps some kind of musical instrument or the pipes in a public toilet? I do like the golden light and contrasting shadows. The metalwork is nice and shiny and I like the reflections.

A lovely "detail" shot.........and another mystery!

Yes, it is a beat-up old trumpet, Keith. The pipes would be rather grand for a public toilet, but come to think of it, one of my favourite jokes is about a golden urinal. Details available on request. As I mentioned to Bob, it reminded me of a gilded boiler, so we're pretty much thinking along the same lines.

I was thinking of a trombone........but either would be better to play than the pipes from a urinal..!!

I'll probably regret writing this............but you could sent the joke by private message :-))

do you play?

I don't play trumpet, dC, although I have "played" this one. Some friends and I have had a garage band for 40 years, and we did our own version of "Bags' Groove" on which I played this. Our lineup is usually a keyboard and three guitars, so we needed some variety. My tone wasn't that much worse than with some Miles Davis recordings. I'm not mocking Miles Davis - he restored melody to jazz, and his recording of "So What?" is one of my favourites, but sometimes his tone was, oh, less brilliant than the other trumpeters' back in the 50s. Of course, that may have been a valid artistic choice on his part. My tone just comes from incompetence.

Do you play?

I noticed that I used a word above that I forgot might be taken as offensive. Anyway, I replaced it. I hope you weren't offended, or anyone else.
