Reminds me of visiting the Campo Santo in Pisa. There is an old statue of Fibonacci in there with both hands badly damaged. A loud American tourist remarked to his wife, "Mathematician? Well, he didn't count on his fingers," and brayed.
I can't see any fingers here, either. Perhaps another artistic detail/allusion/whatever.
