It made me think of Edward Hopper's Phone Booths (1968)...that kind of cinematic rhythm across the photo...

I love the way all the details seem almost arranged, as if you'd painted it, John...The two framed, isolated figures, the bicycle, the shadows, the hydrant, the lines, the blue and yellow lines, all the frames within frames. It's a photo I could imagine on a wall in my house. I wouldn't get tired of it, there's always a new detail.

Thanks, Steve, this could be relevant, too:

Or perhaps this one by N. Rockwell:

I was a devotee of the Saturday Evening Post when I was a kid, and of course of its Rockwell covers.

The painterly effect comes, I think, from trying to get it really bright. That's eliminated some of the detail and emohasized the geometry.

Amen to Steve's litany of details. This does have a painterly quality about it in spite of you not using the things I do to make a photo mimic a painting - a questionable pursuit perhaps, but one I enjoy.

Thanks, Bob. As I mentioned to Steve, I think the painterly effect comes from trying to get the photo bright. It looks a lot like the cartoon effect my old Kodak software used to provide.

By the length of the shadows, you must have been out early, John. Looks great viewed large and I'll also go with Steve's comments.

Thanks, George. The EXIF says it was taken at 8:15 am. The sun had moved to the south by then. though.

It took me a bit of waiting to get some shots without cars in them, j-p.
