A Seat by the Lock Gates

Captured at the sea lock at Ardrishaig on the Crinan Canal The canal flows into Loch Gilp here. It is a quiet day and the seat by the lock remains empty

Thank you very much Christa. It is peaceful there and yet there is plenty to see when the boats pass through the lock I would not be surprised if the lock keeper used it as a nice place to take a break.

Thank you Colin. It is good that the Waverley is still in operation. I would have liked to see her again. We saw her off of Bute some years ago but I can remember going on a trip on her, leaving from Weston Super Mare, when I was a child.

Thank you Dinesh. I imagine it is quite well known but maybe people prefer to sail the canal rather than watch. I never tire of watching harbour scenes and I have lost count of the number of times we have watched passing through the locks and it is still fascinates me.

Queen Victoria travelled along the Crinan Canal from here to Crinan in 1847 which I imagine was very good for early tourism.

I do wonder how Queen Victoria found the trip through the Crinan canal from Ardrishaig to Crinan all those years ago in 1847 and if it was just a means of tgravel to her or if she found it fascinating too.

Thank you very much Nora. I think it was generally just quiet, - no boats coming through the locks at that time and this end of the canal is not very touristy. The locals will have seen boats passing through all the time so wouldn't take much notice. By the time we had made our way down to the Crinan Basin with plenty of stops on the way it was hot and sunny - but that is Scottish weather for you!!!
