The ultimate war-machine ?
Welbike originated by researchers at SOE, then further developed by the Excelsior m/c co, who eventually built 3,641 of them. Designed to be dropped by parachute, they were used in Operation Market Garden [Arnhem] but were not fully successful, often landing too far away from the intended users and the small wheels and somewhat under-powered Villiers engine didn't cope well with rough conditions.
