Beavertail Cactus

Beavertail Cactus
These were blooming in the canyon through which we hiked to Darwin Falls on our last day in Death Valley National Park. They are the Beavertail Cactus, Opuntia basilaris.

Holger Hagen, J. Gafarot, Esther, niraK68 and 25 other people have particularly liked this photo

Oh RON! Great timing on your picture, isn't your cactus beautiful!!! I love the pink blossom so much...to see them growing in the wild...*swoon* *thinks about kicking you in the shins from jealousy* *is terribly ashamed of myself* :D

Your insets are equally marvelous...the white blossom is so delicate and magical, and that stand of whatchama..whattheheckisthatanyway...is TERRIFIC and goes to show that something that looks like "nothing" can make for an awesome, super cool shot! LOVE!

Hmm...you know...I'm kind of wondering if my "Prickly Pear" cactus might actually be Beavertail. The images showing more of the cactus look like a beaver tail...hmm, well, it's a CACTUS anyway! :D

Hi Ron! Just replying to your comment about my picture...it was actually taking outside of the conservatory--they also don't allow tripods inside and will limit photographers as well (I read their extensive restrictions outside but I actually haven't been into the building since I was a kid...I really hate being told what and how I can take pictures, and also that I have to pay money in order for discrimination, glares, and direction...it's humiliating and makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong which is so unfair.). Outside the building is a permanent cactus display and thus, the lighting situation is so much better. BTW, I think your blossom is totally outstanding, and turned out much more detailed than my flower...mine is blown out at the top and you have gotten to include lovely inside details! Such is the plight we face: side view is probably going to mean no inside details, and vice-versa! I'd say that we both did a great job for the angles we chose! :) *high five*
