A lone tree in winter.

A lone tree in winter.
A lone tree that I have known most of my life. It still sits forlornly in my local valley not far from where I was brought up as a boy. I have seen this valley bottom transformed from a wild wilderness, to a mini golf course and then into a lovely natural park-way which is now part of the ‘Oldham Way’ long distance walk (for us anyway :)) enjoyed by many local walkers and dog walkers alike. The tree however is now a shadow of even the one you see here on which birds used to sing. Just a dead stump about half the size of this younger self.

Enjoy full screen

Sorry Jaap, the true date was lost on the edit -now re-instated here. Our snow has now all gone -like yours I think.

It's true that one can become quite attached to a particular tree or two. I'm not surprised that this one, even now in its faded glory, draws you like a magnet, Herb! Superb shot!

Thanks Andy, yes you are right about trees. I was even more attached to another hawthorne which had even more character than this, near my childhood home, but alas that has now completely gone. Glad you understand my feelings here and enjoyed this one.

Love the full effect of the snow on the ground and falling. A part of history..

Hi Steve, yes the snow and lack of shadows here add a real feeling and tell a story. A part of the changing history of this place which in one respect seems quite fast now in my 'golden age'.

These trees are really good as Bonsai if one can get one just right. Full of character showing the character of age.

It's a pity that it's now a dead stump.

It is indeed Daniela. I have no idea of its real age. they can live a very long time but I don't think this was that old. Maybe just 50+

You've really nailed the focus on that tree Herb.............it stands out proudly from the snowy background. I can see why you like it so much. Even past it's prime, it still makes a wonderful photographic subject!

Glad that you share my focus too Keith, maybe I shall re-post my first loved winter Hawthorne here too one day as I used to have it in Panoramio. I always feel sad now as I pass this old man. He used to be such a handsome fella and as you say, still held some pride five years ago.

Judite, you see in nature such as this, the same that I do. In some ways I can see why people hug trees. I am just happy that I have such a record of this tree's life.

Take care. Herb

We watch many trees that have grown and grown over 50 years living in our valley but to see the end of a trees life is also part of the story. I enjoy seeing your photos. Best Wishes

Herb Riddle club has replied to Colin Ashcroft club
Colin, we are two of a kind in living amongst such nature and trying to be at one with it. I suppose, like us humans, trees and all living things have a certain life-span. Like human life too, its always sad to see the their demise but at least that tree will have sustained so much more life, even in death.

I dont believe in any god and was not raised in any religion... but in the respect and love of nature and its energies. If I would have to believe in a god I would choose an old tree...
