The mighty Matterhorn

The mighty Matterhorn
The Matterhorn (Monte Cervino) at 4,478 metres (14,692 ft) is certainly an impressive mountain, in fact one of the highest in the Alps and Europe. This Eastern face is taken from Switzerland near the iconic village of Zermat, some time back in 1986 whilst on a skiing holiday in Cervinia on its Italian side. A Fuji slide conversion, dormant after its projection many years ago and then conversion in 2012, until today.

As always, better full screen.

Bergfex, Dave Roberts 2014, Erhard Bernstein, Colin Ashcroft and 32 other people have particularly liked this photo

As always Jaap, nice to see you here. I think I have been inspired by some of your recent Alpine photos to go back in time to look for mine. Thanks and regards, Herb

You had perfect weather there! The scan is very good, both your slide and the scanner must have been excellent to start with.

Thanks Gudrun -this was my first time in Cervinia, I went again two years later and this was one of the best weather days that I had experienced. A breathtaking experience to see this whilst skiing from there to Zermatt. I took two sets of Fuji and one of Agfa on this holiday, the Fuji has survived the test of time much better than the Agfa slides. Taken with my Canon A1 with Canon lens but simply scanned 26 years later with my flatbed Epson 1600 that has a slide carrier kit. Of course some colour correction and clean up was also necessary but as you say -it came out reasonable in the end. Thanks for the call.

Never, Herb. It's a shame, if you think that I lived for some years in Brig, where there is the train to Zermatt. I'm thinking to try to go maybe in Summer. Ciao,Dany

A familiar looking shape ...
The funny thing is, most Swiss never go up there, they leave that up to the tourists. I didn't visit until I was married to an American, and of course, that day was pea-soup weather and we couldn't see a thing ....
BTW, it's not the highest peak in the alps (Mont Blanc is considerably higher), but arguably the most photogenic.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Sarah P.
Hi Sarah, I am sure you are right, we get complacent of our best landscapes etc. Typical, the one day you really want to see it and the weather closes in. I hope you and your husband had a good day nevertheless.
I had already known that this was not the highest Sarah, that is why I stated 'one of the highest' in my introduction. ....Ah, I see what I did wrong now, a typo 'one OR the highest in the Alps' within my intro. Ooops. - Thanks for the heads up Sarah. - I believe this is the sixth highest in the Alps, as you say after: Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, Dom, Liskamm and the Weisshorn. As you also say, arguably, in my opinion too, the most photogenic. I have it too from the Italian side Thanks for this visit and giving me the opportunity to revise my Alpine mountain heights again too.

Wow ! This is a really beautiful view to this impressive mountain. It gives a feeling how small people are in comparison to nature !

Herb Riddle club has replied to Ulrich John club
Thanks so much Ulrich. Yes a most impressive view for sure. I always wanted to see this view as I had the same on a cover of a record that I had bought on a much earlier visit to Switzerland. I must admit, that it looks impossible to climb but I know it has been, many times. You can just get some idea of scale from the building on the right hill. Good to know, it was worth blowing the dust of this one.

Thank you my friend. Yes I was lucky with the weather as it enabled me to take all the lifts to the heights around here then ski into Zermatt before doing the same back to Cervinia.

Very true....I'd always end up dumping a load of out of focus or blurred pictures.. I used those 'free film' offers where you'd send em off in a pre-paid envelope.

Hi Herb

Very nice picture, especially considering the technology of the day.

I visited Zermatt, and went to the spot from where it was supposed to be visible, but too misty. I took a shot anyway, hoping some enhancement may help, but no.
I am pleased that you have such a great result here.

Best Wishes, and a Good Weekend

Its Interesting have just looked at my slide from 82 same but in summer timeless mountain. went to to look out at the top of the valley so you over looked the whole area quite a ride up and view. love to go back on digital.

Herb Riddle club has replied to Steve Paxton club
Hi Steve -funny how things trigger us to go back in time to revisit places that we have photographed. Like you, mine is only on slide and it would be great to have another go in digi format but not much chance I fear -for both of us. Maybe you will let us all look at your Matterhorn too someday. ~ Herb

Herb Riddle club has replied to TOZ club
Thanks for this Toz. Yes, I too could see a lot of deterioration. I used a few types though and some makes were better than others. the ones that are still perfect are the Fuji and the worst are the Agfa. My Kodachrome being somewhat mixed. I wanted to scan all my slides and did so when I retired in 2012 before they deteriorated further. Glad you liked this and sorry for late reply.

This has scanned beautifully but it must have been a perfect shot on the days as well.
Herb Riddle club has replied to Colin Ashcroft club
Thanks Colin. It was a great day and I captured this on a mixed ski and cable-car trip over the mountains from Civinia in Italy to Zermatt in Switzerland. I was on skis when I took this. The scan went well but the slide looked a little bluish I presume because of the height and UV. Glad you liked it.
