Memories of Tuscany: Boulevard of Maritime Pines

Memories of Tuscany: Boulevard of Maritime Pines
Enjoy a short stretch here of this wonderful avenue of pines. I originally believed this to be the famous Viale dei Cipressi (Boulevard of Cypresses) near Bolgheri as we were quite close to that.

I did originally title this the Boulevard of Cypresses. Thanks to our fellow Ipernity friend Annalia S. (below) for kindly pointed out my error.

As usual, best viewed in full screen.

Klaus F., , Erhard Bernstein, Marco F. Delminho and 21 other people have particularly liked this photo

It certainly is a beautiful avenue Herb. Is it along a road or a path?
It looks so inviting and I love the lighter greens where the sun reaches them.
Have a good weekend. Rosa.

Thanks a lot Rosa. It was quite wonderful. It seems my original idea that this was the avenue of Cypresses was a bit off the mark, as these are clearly not Cypresses but pines. (thanks to Annalia for pointing that out.) so glad you enjoyed it just the same.

Ps this was just around the corner of that more famous avenue with the solid white lines :) Herb

Beautiful shot of this avenue, Herb. I love the softness of the image and the oh-so-Tuscan feeling!
However, something is the matter with your identification of the site. These are not Cypress but Maritime Pines (Pinus Pinaster). Cypress are tall and slender trees (in fact there is a young one in your picture, to the right of the avenue). The ones that go from Bolgheri to San Guido were made famous by a poem by Giosuè Carducci, one of our most revered poets, that begins with an image of them: "I cipressi che a Bolgheri alti e schietti van da San Guido in duplice filar". You can find a photo of them here: it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davanti_San_Guido
I feel that the misidentification takes nothing away from your beautiful image, but I used to be a teacher for a good part of my life and my teacherly instinct simply won't let me keep from pointing it out ... Sorry!
Hope you are having a great weekend!

Aghhh - Annalia, I did have some doubts that this was indeed the avenue. My wife Eileen, was navigating through those roads and she was quite sure then as she still is now that this was indeed the Boulevard of Cypresses. You have now got us perplexed. We were travelling from Bibbona to Cecina following a guild book. We are now puzzled as to where in fact this tree lined avenue was then. It was very long and the road went from being really good to quite rough. More research needed!
Annalia, we are both very grateful in you pointing out our error here and I am most gratified that you still enjoyed the photo of the now obvious 'Maritime Pines'. For both these things I pass on my heartfelt thanks.

Best Wishes, Herbert & Eileen

Our further GE research now points to one of the other avenues of the real Boulevard of Cypresses as we could not stop our car on that more famous avenue that we did indeed drive down.- Things have got a bit mixed up over the years :)

I think your photo might have turned out better this way than if you had been able to stop for the other one. From the images I have seen online (I have not been there in person) it looks quite overgrown and paving takes away some of the charm it must have held for the poet. I am glad that you were able to figure out the source of the mix-up. I was afraid you might have been misdirected by locals ... I remember when I took my father, who was a lifelong fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, to visit Taliesin in Wisconsin and we followed road signs that took us to what was essentially a tourist trap. Same name but so kitsch it would have caused Mr. Wright to roll over in his grave! Fortunately we finally located the real Taliesin and my Dad talked about that visit for years afterwards :)
Say hi and well met to Eileen for me.

At my time all schoolchildren learned the poem" Davanti San Guido" from Giosué Carducci. Memoriies of his time. Not so easy to read being from 1886, I could not find it in English. This is only the description of the poem. I was here once being hear near on holidays and visited also the old cemetery were there is the grave of the greatmother from poet ,Lucia

Ciao, Daniela, mi sa che dobbiamo essere vicine d'età perchè anch'io ricordo di aver imparato alcuni pezzi della poesia a scuola. :)) Nemmeno a me è riuscito trovare una traduzione in inglese. E' vero che Carducci non è Dante, ma mi sarei aspettata che una traduzione in inglese ci fosse! Forse potremmo impegnarci a tradurre almeno quelle poche righe su wikipedia ...

Hi Daniela. I was thinking of your comment earlier in this series, asking me if I had visited that famous Avenue of Cypresses. I was positive that I had but it turned out my photo here (and its the only photo I have of the trees around here) was taken near not on, that avenue. I had to smile, as I debated before my description, with Eileen (my wife) as to how could this be the avenue when clearly these trees are not Cypress trees. Anyway -the rest is history thanks to Annalia :)
As to Giosué Carducci and his poem I have never heard of that before.

And a big thank you to Herb for hosting our reminiscences about poems learned in school in his pages! :D

This is a wonderful image Herb.............beautifully composed in gorgeous light and with lovely dappled shadows. It looks very painterly - you can almost see the brushstrokes in the trees!

Just superb! *****

Hi Kieth, after trying to paint trees on paper and canvas I can quite understand your statement here. I have been recently watching The Joy Of Painting by that wonderful artist Bob Ross and he does indeed create trees looking very much like this, just by dabbing a few times with his 2" brush similar to the one I am painting my doors with now. Great that like me, you enjoyed the light on here too.
Cheers, Herb

At first I myself thought it was Bolgheri and I started to recite the poem by G. Carducci..:-)
It 's so long I haven't been back there.
In this gorgeous image You have captured the sweet and intense charm of Tuscany in its enchanted light.

A beautiful shot, very painterly indeed, and the greens are exquisite. I love trees, but it's always a challenge to get the color right.
I didn't actually know about that famous Avenue of the Cypresses, guess must have skipped school the day that came up :-)
