Mr Black pays a visit.

Mr Black pays a visit.
Mr Black pays a visit.

We are very fortunate that we have a few families of blackbirds (Turdus merula) nesting and feeding around our gardens here at home. This is the adult male resting on our side fence, keeping an eye open for the naughty magpies looking for Mr Black’s nest. Now not only does he look an attractive bird with his bright yellow beak and eye ring but his song is to die for. He and his friends often roost on the very tops of our tall conifers and sing to each other at their heart content, especially at dawn and dusk. A few days before snapping this I did the rare thing of recording his song with my phone and I have uploaded that for your pleasure here in my Ipernity Docs section.

Enjoy full screen with my sound clip running.

Thanks a lot George and very happy that you listen to my recording of him too. I am quite sure my recording is of the same bird.

Ha, ha..........I was going a post a pic of a blackbird sitting on a fence today, but changed my mind at the last minute! I'll leave it to later in the week now ;-)

I love this one though Herb........he's a gorgeous specimen and you've captured him in lovely detail, with perfect focus on the eye. I really like the recording as well.

I hope my blackbird did not have any effect on your decision Keith. I had wanted to post this for a week or so but my Tuscany series got in the way. I had never thought of capturing birds sitting on this fence as I only see it either leaving the house or climbing our indoor steps as the window from where I took this, is half way up the hall-steps. Well it certainly lets me get a bit closer to the birds and they take a bit of time to spot me from the kept open smallish opening. Glad you liked both the image and my recording which was taken a week or so before the picture.

Cheers, Herb

Thank you for the link Herb! What a beautiful song they sing...I love it at dusk but not so keen at dawn ;-)) Our resident blackbird is on his second family, and he still comes just inside the patio doors in the mornings. You have captured him beautifully with his ringed eyes and orange beak.
Cheers, Rosa.

Delighted the you had a listen to him here too Rosa. I was surprised that my phone picked that song up so clearly and loud. The photo was bonus waiting to happen as described above to Keith. Aren't they just wonderful. Today we had a host of chaffinches at the same time as bull and gold finches but I love our blackbirds the best.

Keep safe at the pub tonight :) Herb

Unusually we have some baby sparrows in one of the nest boxes! They are very noisy, but lovely to hear. Like you, I love blackbirds.

Glad you liked him and I hope you got to hear his song. The magpies around here are thriving, they seem to be everywhere.
