Thank you for your comments, Claudia & Marie-Claire. My main concern (besides composing the photo) was to not alert my dogs of the snake's presence. These snakes will flip onto their backs when disturbed, which is a poor defense against a dog.

Aah, then you would not get photos of them. There are very few dangerous snakes here: rattlesnakes (which I have never seen) and water moccasins (which I have seen and photographed).
