Das Altonaer Rathaus war vor 1898 ein Bahnhofsgebäude, das vom Stadtbauinspektor Emil Brandt mit Einflüssen der italienischen Renaissance umgebaut wurde. Direkt davor steht das Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal, zu dessen Einweihung das Kaiserpaar persönlich erschien.
