HWW Kirby Muxloe Leicestershire 7th April 2024

Another image from Kirby Muxloe Castle. The brickwork on the spiral staircase is pretty complex and with the modern repairs the textures are interesting. It is a ruined, fortified manor house in Kirby Muxloe, just outside Leicester. William, Lord Hastings, began work on the castle in 1480, founding it on the site of a pre-existing manor house. It was never finished because in the cut-throat politics of the Middle Ages he was on the wrong side and the Duke of Gloucester, later King Richard III had him beheaded. HWW to everyone. Enjoy your day!

HBM Bridgnorth Shropshire Easter 1974

The Severn Valley Railway with Ivatt 2 2-6-0 46443 and Hunslet WD 0-6-0ST 193 Shropshire simmering away in the engine shed yard at Bridgnorth. Fifty years ago the station was very quiet and no-one was enjoying a rest on that even older, probably Victorian wooden railway bench. HBM to everyone on Ipernity. Enjoy the start of the new May week

HWW Petra Jordan 2nd April 1994

Petra, the Rose City. The Treasury/Khazneh is one of the best-known rock-cut tombs in Petra. In the 2nd century BC Petra was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom and as with most of the other buildings in this ancient town this structure was carved out of a sandstone rock face. Most people may recognise it from the final scenes in the 1989 film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, in which its façade is represented as the entrance to the final resting place of the Holy Grail. The elaborate interior shown in the film doesn't exist. HWW to everyone. Enjoy the day.

Wadi Rum Jordan 5th April 1994

On holiday in Jordan we drove out of Aqaba to Wadi Rum about 60km to the east towards the Saudi Arabian border. This is effectively the gateway to the Arabian desert and a wadi made famous by Lawrence of Arabia who passed this way several times during the Arab Revolt of 1917-18. It also featured in the 1960s film.
