The interurban trolley they were using the day that I was there. This was from the Petaluma and Santa Rosa line.

I lived in Boston when these Boeing trolley cars were first introduced there. They were a disaster from the beginning, not being durable enough to handle the demands of urban transit. BUT, the U.S. was in one of its "buy American" phases where we had to try to make things in the U.S. even if we didn't know how. See the story in the adjacent picture.

Market St in SF seems crowded now with 2 trolley lines... with four it must have been crazy.

It's difficult now to imagine that interurban trains (like the golden one in this set) were the main means of transportation from the Bay Area through Sacramento to Chico.

"I'm your best friend, I'll never let you down, I am your Lucky Strike." The language of the ad seems hideous by modern standards.

Key System transit car. The Key System ran throughout the San Francisco east bay and across the Bay Bridge until the late 1950's.

Car from the Cedar Rapids and Iowa City route. It's difficult to imagine what it must have been like to use cars such as this as the major means of transportation between cities in the Plains states in early 1900's.

The Western Railway Museum is west of Rio Vista (see map), has a well-developed museum, an easily accessible barn or older trolleys, and then a closed barn that can only be visited on appointment (I missed the scheduled time). During the day they do trolley rides around the grounds frequently (see adjacent) and less frequently take an older inter-urban car out (see picture further in this set).
