Tuesday 23 July 2002 – Austurleið-SBS was formed in 1999 as a result of the merger of Austurleið hf and SBS. Jonckheere bodied Mercedes-Benz(DP 908) was seen at 1830 hrs during the call at the pick-up point in Hella when working the 1700 services from Reykjavík to destinations along the southern coast. Quite an array of service number cards were carried in the front windscreen comprising service 1 to Selfoss and service 10 to Vík together with services 8 to Flúðir and 9 to Þhorsmork which are covered by feeder coaches from the main road route. The carriage of small goods items forms a key role on Icelandic coach services and the driver was busy unloading various boxes and packages at the petrol station shop during his quick call here. Hella has a population of just over 600 residents.

Tuesday 23 July 2002 - Austurleið-SBS operates scheduled services from Reykjavík to destinations along the southern part of the country and was formed in 1999 as a result of the merger of Austurleið hf and SBS. These two coaches on the Reykjavík-Landmannalaugar-Skaftafell service (service number 11 going east, 11a going west) were seen at Landmannalaugar, a popular tourist haunt in the remote highlands. On the left coach 512 (BO 084), in former Austurleið colours, had worked the eastbound departure from Skaftafell. On the right is Jonckheere bodied Mercedes-Benz 502 (with the perfectly matching registration number of 502) which carried a burgundy scheme introduced after the merger - a scheme not to be used as green livery was chosen. 502 had worked the westbound service from Reykjavík at 0830 but rather than work right through the coaches met and turned here. Therefore they both showed route cards for service 11a.

Wednesday 24 July 2002 - Fourth in a set of four photos showing Austurleið-SBS 509 (VP 305) on the final approach to Nýidalur. The colours carried are those of the former Austurleið business prior to the merger with SBS. Roads in these parts are just gravel or dirt surfaced which involve crossing stony river fords as a result rugged high chassis 4x4 coaches are favoured. It was when working the southbound Mývatn-Landmannalaugar service which operated three days a week between 15 July and 20 August in 2002. Nýidalur is located in the centre of Iceland approximately mid-way between available fuel stations, 110km going south or 133km going north. There are just three buildings here, two accommodation cabins and one toilet/shower cabin. Everyone must bring their own food as no public catering exists over the route.

Wednesday 24 July 2002 - Third in a set of four photos which show Austurleið-SBS 509 (VP 305) on the F26 road approaching Nýidalur in the central highlands of Iceland.
The coaches need to be rugged as they travel over rough terrain and fording numerous rivers. The coach is seen splashing through a river in this photograph. It was working the southbound Mývatn- Landmannalaugar service operated three days a week between 15 July and 20 August in 2002. Nýidalur is approximately mid-way between available fuel stations, 110km going south or 133km going north, and comprises two accommodation cabins and one toilet/shower cabin.
