The present house was probably built c1825 for the Greenwood family who held the estate for much of the nineteenth century (an 1846 deed apparently states that they also owned a mill adjoining this estate; this mill was later sold and became a tannery but has now been demolished. A cluster of workers’ cottages which stood on the hill behind the mansion have also been demolished). Map evidence suggests that a small extension was added to its north-west c1900, around the time the Greenwoods appear to have sold the house. It was badly damaged by fire about ten years ago
