Local Government Quality Service Delivery

Step One: The Council issues every household with a kerbside recycling box for glass bottles and jars (originally it was also for textiles and tin cans, but peremptorily they stopped wanting textiles and directed that tin cans should go in another of their many bins).
Step Two: Every recycling box comes complete with a separate lightweight lid. No advice (such as 'buy a brick') is provided on the safe use of these lids.
Step Three: There is a gale force wind and all the lids evacuate themselves to some nearby farmer's fields.
Step Four: A Council Spokesperson says, 'We never saw that coming' and is commended for good planning and communication at the Local Government Chronicle Annual Awards Ceremony for Quality Service Delivery.

Green Park Station Roof, Bath B&W Edit

Designed by J H Sanders, the station has a vaulted glass roof in a single-span wrought iron arch structure. The station was originally called 'Queen Square' and renamed 'Green Park' in1951. Passenger trains from this station ceased in 1966. It is now a short-cut to the centre of Bath doing duty as an occasional market. The sidings have been redeveloped by Sainbury's Supermarkets.

A Recycling Box Without a Lid
Nikkor-S 35mm f/2.8 c.1971

I bought this lens from a company specialising in secondhand photographic equipment of all brands. Shortly afterwards I saw and purchased an f/2 Nikkor-O.C 35mm from another company, and so I used the first lens only infrequently. Later still I entrusted it, along with a batch of other kit, to the company I had bought it from originally to sell on my behalf at their usual rate of commission. To my surprise, they said the lens was faulty; they could not offer it for sale; however to save return carriage costs they would add it to their 'recycling' box for disposal.
As you can see, I paid for its return. It works very nicely despite dating from 1971.

The Rising Sun, Frog Lane, Christian Malford

This is a picture of the interior of the ‘Rising Sun’, the one remaining pub in Christian Malford. It used to play second fiddle to the mighty ‘Mermaid Inn’ on the main road at the other side of the village. Then the M4 motorway opened and the main road was downgraded. The ‘Mermaid’ closed and the ‘Rising Sun’ somehow survived despite the calamitous decline of the traditional English pub.
The ‘Rising Sun’ was built in the 18th century and was formerly a smithy. Its proximity to the railway halt which was in operation between 1926 and 1965 provided a sideline selling tickets for the Great Western Railway for some, but not all, of those years.
The postal address of the ‘Rising Sun’ is Station Road, Christian Malford. This is curious because there never was a station in Christian Malford. The rudimentary timber-built halt was unstaffed, had no facilities, and no footbridge over the two short platforms. Even when there was a halt, the road was not named after it. Perhaps some strange romantic nostalgia influenced the street-naming authorities who wanted to convey a sense of importance to the village long after it had become so unimportant that even the ugly little halt had been taken away.
As a matter of historic fact, the street on which the ‘Rising Sun’ is situated already had a perfectly good name as evidenced by official census documents of the second part of the nineteenth century. It was known as ‘Frog Lane’.
