fish on the wire

27 Oct 2017 199
OK, those of you who follow me regularly and check in here often (Both of you) most probably remember that, back on 23 October, I posted a painting titled You Want, that I did while listening to Leonard Cohen's You Want It Darker. Well! Today I was listening to perhaps his best known and appreciated song and did this. What? It wasn't f̲i̲s̲h̲ on the wire, it was bird??? Oh well....

After all it is the 21st century

So! If Marie Antoinette were around today, instead of saying; “Qu'ils mangent de la brioche”, let them eat cake, she just might have said "... la chou frisé." instead. OK, OK, maybe not. :-)

Hey, I think it's funny!

OK, the back story: I was introducing my granddaughter to the Instructables web site on the computer, a set of user uploaded 'how to' do just about anything pages. Instruction on how to build a dog house, do your nails, build a boat, program a raspberry pi computer, etc., etc., etc. Well she started a search for projects about dog and happened to pass one explaining how to pick up a dog (not by the scuff of the neck, not by the tail, etc.). The above is not quite what they had in mind. :-)

What, at first glance you couldn't tell this is a picture of a middle aged Japanese lady shooting a dart at you from a blowgun with a telescopic sight? Why a picture of a middle aged Japanese lady shooting a dart at you from a blowgun with a telescopic sight? -You may well ask... it's a long story. :-)

Signs and Portents

09 Oct 2014 259
Of course there's a story behind this amazingly detailed, exquisitely drawn, timeless work of art: I was pulling out of Fred Meyer's parking lot yesterday when I noticed a wild eyed bearded scruffy character standing beside the road holding up a sign ( No it wasn't me, remember I'm the one driving by looking, -it was another wild eyed bearded scruffy character, not me!) reading something like; "Freddies is Satin!" or maybe, "Wallmart is Satin!", or something like that. I had to chuckle for a few blocks. OK. Back in the day when I was a boy and a bit and a beatnik reciting my poetry in coffee houses in Greenwich Village and the Lower East Side in New York City, maintaining a jaded, world weary demeanor while listening to the gratifying click of applause (You gotta understand, it wasn't cool to clap, man, we snapped our fingers instead.), but, that's another story..... Where I was going with this was back then I really did often (OK, occasionally) see wild eyed bearded scruffy characters carrying signs or wearing sandwich boards, on NYC street corners, saying: "THE END OF THE WORLD IS NEAR... REPENT!!!" So! The only way I could get the images generated my memories and yesterday's close encounter of an absurd kind was to draw this little cartoon and share it with you. Hey, now that you know the back-story you gotta admit the sketch is at least a little bit funny. :-)

Fear not, you're safe now!

Oh well, I guess Smoky The Bear's job is safe, I don't think my Kinky Kangaroo offers him much competition. -grin- Note I said Smoky The Bear, not Smokey Bear, because Smokey Bear's name and image are protected by U.S. Federal federal law, the Smokey Bear Act of 1952 (16 U.S.C. 580) & I surely don't want the feds after me! Ink, watercolor and crayon on 11 by 14 inch Bristol paper.

Audrey

22 Feb 2013 278
OK, this definitely needs an explanation. A couple of nights ago sitting around drinking a little wine, our friend, Audrey mentioned she used to clean the ice balls out from her dogs' paws but now she just lets them do it themselves. First perhaps I need explain that here in the sub-arctic, many dogs grow a lot of fur between the pads on their paws. Then I need, perhaps, explain that here in the sub-arctic that dogs running/walking in the snow, pick up snow twixt their pads, their body heat melts it and it re-freezes building up large ice balls between the pads causing them to limp. Hey, if you had ice balls the size of New Jersey between your toes, you'd limp too! Well when this happens the dogs will sit and pick out the ice balls with their teeth. So! When Audrey mentioned cleaning the ice from her dogs' paws, the image that leaped in to my mind was of her chewing out the ice balls. Hence I had to draw this quick cartoon of her lovingly taking care of her cutesy wittle puppies. Of course, to protect her reputation, so no one would know it's her, I altered her features significantly so you can't tell it's Audrey Ranstead. :-)

The Talk Show Host

11 Sep 2012 207
So! Day before yesterday I started re-reading Long John Nebel's 'Way Out World' (published 1962). Long John was a very late night talk show host on NYC's station WOR. As a boy and a bit living in NYC's East Village back then I'd often listen to him and Jean Shepherd, another late night talk show preceding Long John's. Long John was a carnie talker ( carnival barker) always pulling you in to the tent to see the bearded lady, the two headed calf and other sights to amaze and enlighten you while Shepherd was Garrison Keillor long before Garrison Keillor was Garrison Keillor. Subsequently, yesterday, I goggled Neble and Shepard and found and was listening to a number of audio tracks from their shows back in the day. While listening I did this cartoon/sketch; The Talk Show Host. Brought back a lot of great memories from the early sixties…. Colored pencil on 12 by 12 inch card stock.
