BR - CF - Wood supplies

22 Mar 2011 704
This supply of timber will be used in the restoration of two waggons from the Bowes Railway that were almost destroyed in an arson attack by some mindless vandals in 2008. The larger pieces at the front are green oak. and will become the underframes. The four largest sections were 6" x 12" and in two lengths and went to make up the underframe for the Drift Bogie. As green oak was very heavy, we were pleased that the dimensions for the grey waggon were a little smaller. The larger stack at the rear is a durable softwood, Douglas Fir, in a range of sizes for the body planking.

CF - joint 3

19 Dec 2018 235
Third of three images showing repairs to a structural upright, methodology is to retain the maximum original material. The inner surface was also in fairly poor condition, again largely from impact damage. As before, a thin layer was machined away and a replacement layer glued in position and trimmed to fit.

CF - joint 2

Second of three images showing repairs to a structural upright, methodology is to retain the maximum original material. The outer surface was in fairly poor condition from largely impact damage, so a thin layer was machined away and a replacement layer glued in position and trimmed to fit. Note: the replica roof stick above has been laminated - greater strength and more economical use of timber - the surface profile will be machined before it is jointed into the cant rail.

CF - joint 1

19 Dec 2018 229
One of three images showing repairs to a structural upright, methodology is to retain the maximum original material. Stage one is to replace the tenons or the area holding the mortices ie the joints, using suitable piece of Oak, to match the existing original timber.

Dry fit of the majority of the body framework. The laminated roof sticks are not yet cut to length. The darker timber sections are original, the slightly lighter colour is the new oak.

WR - Rudder 1

22 Mar 2011 1 436
A replacement rudder was made by laminating oak sections, and then cutting out the required shape. This process was used to try to eliminate warping. So far, it has worked!
