Oakgrove wharf and swing bridge soon after 1900. In those days the pub was here called the Royal Oak. On the wharf are large piles of gravel waiting loading onto boats for delivery along the Macclesfield Canal. The stone came from the Hawkshead Quarries in Sutton which were at that time operated by Ashton and Holmes. In 1912 they were selling Brown Macadam at 3s.9d ton and Blue Gravel at 4s.6d ton.

10s 10d for 1 ton of coal sold in June 1857 by H. Ford, Coal merchant based at the coal wharf on the canal side in Macclesfield. Large quantities were transported to Macclesfield by the canal from collieries a few miles north and also from the Potteries. Rail transport eventually took over much of this trade and many merchants moved to coal yards near the main goods yards.

This fine crane survives out of use at the Calder Wharf in Ravensthorpe on the Calder and Hebble Navigation. Sadly the adjacent warehouses are now derelict and when I last looked were roofless.
