Fringed Grass-of-Parnassus

08 Dec 2007 125
I think I have only ever twice seen this wild plant, both times out in the mountains. This particular plant was growing at the edge of a stream/waterfall at Grassi Lakes. Not a very safe place to try and get a photo, but they are fascinating flowers. Actually, I like the patterns in each of the tiny water "spots", too.

Golden-mantled Groundsquirrel

We saw this rather beautiful Golden-mantled Groundsquirrel up at Grassi Lakes in Kananaskis a few weeks ago. A very friendly little thing! We don't get these in the city - the closest thing in looks in the city are the little Chipmunks.

Grassi Lakes

Part of the Grassi Lakes in Kananaskis, near Canmore (which is fairly near to Banff). The colour of the lake water is so beautiful.

View from Grassi Lakes trail

A view looking towards the Rundle Canal taken from the downward trail from Grassi Lakes. The Grassi Lakes are emerald green and a beautiful waterfall plunges below the lower lake. It is a very popular trail and I can see why.

Rundle Canal, Kananaskis

This was the view from the beginning of the Grassi Lakes Trail this morning. These lakes are in Kananaskis country, west of Calgary. I had very kindly been invited to go walking there today and we had a really enjoyable hike. There was a lot of haze over the mountains, which isn't exactly what one hopes for as far as photography goes, and it was sunny and around 30C. This artificial waterway was built in 1951, near the town of Canmore. From here, we chose the easier climb to the two Grassi Lakes and and returned to the car via the steeper, more difficult trail. Note added on Monday 30th July: I have just been told that there is a report in the newspaper today that a woman in her 40's fell to her death here while we were there on Saturday. Having seen the area and trails, it is very easy to understand how an accident such as this could happen (as, indeed, it could happen anywhere in these mountains). We wondered why there were so many sirens, and a Police car arrived in the parking lot. My heart goes out to her family - so very, very sad.

Reflections at Grassi Lakes

These lakes are in Kananaskis country, west of Calgary, near the town of Canmore (and not very far from Banff). I had very kindly been invited to go walking there yesterday and we had a really enjoyable hike. The Grassi Lakes are emerald green and a beautiful waterfall plunges below the lower lake. It is a very popular trail and I can see why. The reflections in the second lake were quite powerful and gave me rather a strange feeling. Large size makes it a little easier to see.

Fringed Grass-of-Parnassus

I was so excited to come across this small plant on Saturday when hiking at Grassi Lakes in Kananaskis, west of Calgary. I saw the other Grass-of-Parnassus the other day in Weaselhead, but I think I have only ever seen the Fringed plant once before, maybe twice. The bright spots in the background must be water drops from the huge waterfall, at the edge of which these flowers in bloom. The thrill of the moment left me this morning, when I heard that a woman in her 40's, hiking on the Grassi Lakes Trail, fell and died at the same time that we were hiking there. Such very sad news to hear.

Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel

We saw this little guy/gal at Grassi Lakes, in the mountains, on Saturday. It is larger than the species of Chipmunk we get here in the city and its stripe pattern is wider. It was really hoping for food from us and even climbed on to the back of the bench we were sitting on and had its front paws on my shoulder. Note on 3rd August 2007: thanks, Shauneen, for correcting my ID! Never occurred to me it was some kind of Ground Squirrel! And, yes, I am hoping to get to the picnic - apart from seeing everyone, the FOOD is so GOOD!
