Area of Remembrance (3) - 3 April 2014

Although the refurbished HMS Alliance is undoubtedly the centrepiece of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum there are many other important exhibits and areas. None is more important than the beautiful Area of Remembrance. Across the years, many submarines have been lost in combat and in accidents and many lives lost with them. On the edge of the very harbour from which some of those boats sailed, this is a place to reflect on those losses.

The plaque in this picture memorialises specifically the men of the XIIth Submarine Flotilla in WWII.

A Tube of Beer - 3 April 2014

If you have not been on a submarine, it is worth a visit to appreciate just how cramped the conditions are or, at least, were on older vessels such as HMS Alliance.
Alliance reopened today after a substantial refurbishment which included the dressing of the interior to represent operational conditions. This is one of a short series of shots from inside. I can not vouch for the authenticity of the practice suggested here.

If you have not been on a submarine, it is worth a visit to appreciate just how cramped the conditions are or, at least, were on older vessels such as HMS Alliance. For the canned sailors there was little alternative to the canned food which was much in evidence in the galley.

If You Want To Get A Head - 3 April 2014

If you have not been on a submarine, it is worth a visit to appreciate just how cramped the conditions are or, at least, were on older vessels such as HMS Alliance. Nowhere was more cramped than the toilets, known on a ship as the head or heads. Some protruding objects above the rudimentary seats were padded to protect against injury when rising with inattentive relief from a hurried download.

When Players Meet Their Match - 3 April 2014

If you have not been on a submarine, it is worth a visit to appreciate just how cramped the conditions are or, at least, were on older vessels such as HMS Alliance. In spite of these conditions, smoking on board was allowed with the permission of the captain and was, of course, far more common in society at large during Alliance's service years 1947-1973.

If you have not been on a submarine, it is worth a visit to appreciate just how cramped the conditions are or, at least, were on older vessels such as HMS Alliance. I expect the sailors were experienced enough to avoid finishing an out-of-the-tin meal with a sharp blow to the head.

If you have not been on a submarine, it is worth a visit to appreciate just how cramped the conditions are or, at least, were on older vessels such as HMS Alliance. In spite of the centrepiece of this picture, one might describe those conditions as less than ideal.

Loaded and Flooded - 3 April 2014

The long and worthwhile refurbishment of HMS Alliance at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport is complete and today was the day of the official reopening The boat looked fine in some hazy but bright Spring light.
The interior has received plenty of attention and has been dressed to show what it would have been like in service. A freeflow entrance system will now operate during busy periods with the museum's excellent guides taking visitors through at quieter times.
These are the forward torpedo tubes.

The long and worthwhile refurbishment of HMS Alliance at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport is complete. Knowing this, we visited today but were surprised to find that this was the day of the official reopening and invited guests were dispersing before the public opening time of 1400. Confetti lay about the place and the boat looked fine in some hazy but bright Spring light.

One of the issues that had led to the substantial deterioration in the condition of Alliance was that it rested near, and often in, water as shown in this September 2010 photograph from a similar viewpoint. The refurbished boat has been placed above a gravel bed. Considerable damage had also been caused by pigeons and a massive quantity of their corrosive 'contributions' has been removed.
