The Dakotas Depart (6) - 4 June 2014

04 Jun 2014 151
On June 2-4 2014 eight Dakotas (and other aircraft) gathered at Lee on Solent prior to flying to France to participate in events commemorating the 70th anniversary of D-Day. It was a long wait for their departure in wind and rain on 4 June as the weather threatened to replicate exactly that of the 1944 date. Eventually, at around 1250, they took to the air creating a sight perhaps never to be repeated. I captured six of the eight aircraft. This is OH-LCH in Finnish Airlines colours. 200_P1030908C

Dakotas Gather (2) - 3 June 2014

03 Jun 2014 162
On June 2-4 2014, a number of Dakotas gathered at Lee on Solent in connection with the commemorations of the 70th anniversary of D-Day. They would depart to France to participate in events there. As usual, access to Lee on Solent airfield was limited - a source of frustration for many including me - so I did my best with a long lens. I have cropped versions of this image but have published this full-size to capture both the occasion and the frustration. 200_P1030601

N74589 approaching Lee on Solent - 2 June 2014

I still have a lot to learn about ground to air photography (and my cameras). I was lucky to recover this photograph from an exposure error. Doubly lucky because this lovely Dakota N74589/42-24064 was the first of several to arrive at Lee on Solent for a special event commemorating D-Day. This C-47 is on the US civil register as a DC-3C. 200_P1030525C
