Portland Harbour Breakwater (2) - 22 September 201…
13 Oct 2014 |
|
The buildings at the end of the breakwater in Portland Harbour are fascinating, difficult to access and probably dangerous. I was able to photograph them from Oceania Insignia as we sailed for Milford Haven.

|
The RFA Sir Tristram (L3505) is a Round Table Class Landing Ship Logistics and was decommissioned in 2005. She is currently at Portland where she is used as a special forces training platform. Sir Tristram saw honourable service in the Falklands where she was badly damaged. She re-entered service in 1985 after a rebuild.

Phoenix Caissons - 22 September 2014
08 Oct 2014 |
|
These Phoenix Caissons at Portland Harbour were intended for the Mulberry Harbour off the Normandy coast and form an important link between our history and the present day.
These remarkable structures are seen with the bulk carriers MV Seleina (left) and MV Sarine, laid up and, reportedly, awaiting sale and numerous leisure craft.

Monkey Island - 22 September 2014
08 Oct 2014 |
|
A slightly pink light heralds the dawn over Portland as Oceania Insignia moored at the Outer Coaling Pier. This kind of heritage architecture is of great interest to me but I can find no information other than the apparent name of the site, Monkey Island.

As the sun rose over Portland, the tanker Paxoi came alongside Oceania Insignia at the Outer Coaling Pier for bunkering, her approach carefully guided by the bridge crew.

Castellation - 22 September 2014

|
Portland Castle (c1540) [English Heritage] was built for Henry VIII as a gun fort rather than a residence and is very interesting to visit. This architectural detail is along the outer wall.

Coming or Going? - 22 September 2014
02 Oct 2014 |
|
Only yards from relatively new apartments stand the remains of accommodation abandoned when the Royal Navy left Portland. Plans for development have ebbed and flowed with the economic tide so that the new properties are wedged between this and the remains of HMS Osprey pictured on 1 September 2014. This stark view is taken across the wall of the rather more enduring Portland Castle.

Tout Quarry (11) - 1 September 2014
09 Sep 2014 |
|
Tout Quarry is a disused quarry on the Isle of Portland, Dorset which has become a sculpture park. In 10 of my first 11 photographs from the site, I feature works from the park, carved in situ. This striking example features ladybirds with the unusual use of colour.
