Red Rock

This is some of the red rock which is found all through the area of Winchester Mountain and which gave Mount Larrabee its old name "Red Mountain." I've looked for a good geologic explanation of it, but have found none. All I found was the fact that it is crumbly and that climbers do not like it.

In Explore October 26, 2009, #161. This photo was taken in one of the most scenic areas of Riverside Sate Park, Spokane. The rock formations here are referred to as the Bowl and Pitcher and can be seen both from the shore and from a swinging bridge which crosses the river just above these formations.

Scablands

For reasons unknown to me the area we hiked is known as the Scablands and the photo shows some of the geology of the area. The mesas which separate the coulees from one another are full of these columns which I assume are basalt and of volcanic origin. This picture was taken as we hiked up from Dusty Lake across the mesa to Ancient Lakes. We had to scramble up the loose rock in the foreground and across the sloped area at the base of the columnar formations and through the notch in the distance. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/ancient-lak...

Taken near the top of the mesa where we crossed from one coulee to another, this shows some of the formations that make up the geology of the Ancient Lakes region of eastern Washington. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/ancient-lak...

Ancient Lakes Geology

Another photo taken by my wife and showing some of the unusual rock formations in the Ancient Lakes area. A geologist would be able to explain these better than I and perhaps even give a name to this type of formation, but even to our untrained eyes this is clearly volcanic in origin. The photo was taken near the top of one of the mesas that separate the coulees from each other. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/ancient-lak...

Reecer Creek Canyon

The afternoon and evening that we drove up Reecer Creek Canyon road did not give us much opportunity for pictures of scenery. The weather was changing and the valley behind was quite hazy, but we died find one spot where we could see some of the canyon below us. We were amazed at the color that stained the rock formations in the canyon and managed to get a few pictures. I would suppose that the colors are algae on the rocks, but I have never seen them this colorful. The photo is not the greatest but was the best I could get from the vantage point. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/reecer-cree...

Granite Balds at Sares Head

The ultimate destination in Sharpe Park is Sares Head where one has fabulous views of the Straits of San Juan and the San Juan Islands. This photo was taken looking south and shows the granite balds which are quite a common feature of the coast in this area and which support a unique and wonderful flora. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2013/04/sharpe-park...
