Kinney Lake and the Robson River from Whitehorn Hi…

At this point in our backpacking excursion we had come around the east side of Kinney Lake (visible in the background) and had crossed the Robson River and its floodplain, the trail visible on the right, and were beginning the climb up up Whitehorn Hill, a grueling 3-4 km climb to the Whitehorn Basin and campground where we would spend the night. This photo was taken by my wife.

Today's story starts here at the Kinney Lake campground on the north end of Kinney Lake. As those who have been following recent posts know, we recently backpacked the Berg Lake trail in Mount Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia. When this photo was taken we had hiked six kilometers up an old road anfd through the wooded hills on the east side of Kinney Lake. We started at 9:00 am and reaching this point at noon. We made a long stop before Kinney Lakes to photograph orchids and stopped again here for a break and lunch (tinned sardines, ramen noodles and coffee) and to refill our water bottles.

This is the whole flowering plant of the Small Round-leaf Orchid. It is about six inches (15 cm) tall and has 4-12 flowers, often growing in patches of hundreds of plants.

This is another of my wife's photos, taken on the first day of our backpacking excursion in Mount Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia. At this point we had hiked four kilometers and were crossing the upper end of the Robson River where it flows out of Kinney Lake. We had another seven kilometers to go before reaching our campsite for the night.

When we first arrived in Edmonton our family there was ill with strep throat and so we left again to do some hiking and backpacking in Mount Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia. Robson is west of Jasper and we did three days backpacking there on the Berg Lake trail. This was taken the first day as we hiked around Kinney Lake, having done about five kilometers of trail. The first four kilometers follow the Robson River through the woods along an old road but then, having reached Kinney Lake the trail becomes somewhat more difficult, gaining and losing elevation in the hills around the lake for three kilometers. As is evident from the photo, the weather did not look very promising at this point but it did clear and become sunny later in the day. This photo was taken by my wife, as were two of the inset photos.

In a few days we are headed for British Columbia and Alberta. We are going to see our son-in-law and daughter and new granddaughter Kaillyn who was born a couple of weeks ago. We are also going to take our vacation while there, a week's backpacking trip in Mount Robson Provincial Park. These pictures were taken in Mount Robson PP last summer while on a backpacking trip. A diary of that trip with pictures can be found at ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2010/05/mount-robso... . They're the last pictures I'll be posting until we return around the middle of July.

This was taken by my wife in Mount Robson Provincial Park in British Columbia. We were day-hiking the Berg Lake trail and at this point were near the northern end of Kinney Lake, near where we crossed the floodplain above Kinney Lake, just visible in the background. The shot shows where there had been a rockslide earlier in the year. We had to cross several of these as we followed the trail. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-berg-la...

Kinney Lake is only a few kilometers up the Berg Lake trail and is a popular spot for picnickers, bikers, walkers and even horses. It is beyond Kinney Lake that the real hiking begins, but the lake itself is very beautiful and a good place for pictures. This picture was taken by my wife. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-berg-la...

One more shot of Platanthera orbiculata, the Pad-leaved Orchis. We found it in open forest near Kinney Lake, as well as along the trail below the lake. It is by far the showiest and has the largest flowers of all our Platantheras. When we photographed these they were past their prime, but there are other pictures of the species at the link below. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2011/03/p...

This was taken from the trail overlooking the north end of Kinney Lake and the floodplain of the Robson River where it empties into the lake. I liked the abstract quality of the shot and thought I'd post it as one of the last pictures from last summer's hike up the Berg Lake trail. ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/09/the-berg-la...

One more photo of the Lesser Rattlesnake Orchis to bring my series of shots from Mount Robson Provincial Park to an end. This species does not grow in Washington, but does grow further east in Montana and is found in Europe and Asia as well. nativeorchidsofthepacificnorthwest.blogspot.com/2012/08/l...
