Shieldaig on the edge of the Applecross peninsular is about 10 miles NE of Applecross village as the crow flies but almost 20 miles by road. Situated on Loch Torridon. Described as one of the most picturesque villages in the Highlands .
We are going north from here via the A832 towards the village of Torridon and then via Kinlochewe and Gairloch to Ullapool our next port of call.

The NC 500: The Scottish 'North Coast 500' is one of the world’s most beautiful road trips. A route of just over 500 miles (516) of stunning coastal scenery, white sandy beaches, rugged mountains, remote fishing villages and hidden gems.

From this location, just south of Applecross village we can get some great sunsets. It is almost silent except for the calling of seabirds.

Another look across to Skye from Camusterrach, Applecross. The white house was our home for a week. See adjacent photo for details of the area.

After travelling west from Inverness and its Black Isle, our next call is the wonderful remote peninsular of Applecross, north-west of Kyle of Lochalsh in Wester Ross, Scottish Highlands. This 1993 slide is taken from near our rental holiday cottage at Camusterrach about 2 miles south of the village of Applecross. We are actually looking west over the Inner Sound to the Isle of Skye.

We have now left the east coast and are travelling west from Inverness. The North Coast 500 follows the main roads along the coastal edges of northern Scotland and is popular with sightseers and car enthusiasts due to the rugged nature of the terrain – and twisting roads. Here we are crossing over the Applecross Peninsula on the famous Bealach na Bà pass, a winding single track road through the mountains. Next stop: Applecross itself.

Eilean Donan Castle

A very long view back into the past for me showing this famous castle situated on the small tidal island of Eilean Donan. It is said to be the most photographed fortress in the whole of Scotland. The original castle was built in the 13th century and destroyed in 1719 but this version was built in the twentieth century.
A slide conversion.

1993 and we had hired a cottage here at the water’s edge of Camusterrach on the Inner Sound for a week. This is taken from just below our cottage window in the early morning as the mist was rising. I remember the silence being only broken by the odd sea-bird call and plop of fish in the water. We are looking over the Isle of Raasay (Scapay?) with the mountains of 'The Cullins' on the Isle of Skye behind. Taken from a slide.
Best full screen.
Happy Earth Day.
