you are right: it is really surreal to see.a long fence in the middle of nowhere!!!

We have fences here in Perú like these too, But they are against the wandering sanddunes. Could this be one like ours?

I am not sure. This is at least 1000 km long and runs alongside the Pamir highway at an altitude of 3600-4800meters. No one lives here apart from occasional summer dwelling shepherds with flocks of sheep. We saw no person, building or village for 3 hours as we drove along one area.
In other parts there was an occasional vehicle or yurt or two.
It is the Chinese fence to demarcate the border.
