Pilgrimage halt, Iran

Pilgrimage halt, Iran
During the Shi’a period of Ashura, it is considered an act of great faith to make a pilgrimage of up to 700km to Karbala in Iraq, to be there for the 40 th day of Ashura. This is the south of Iran, on the pilgrimage route to Iraq. Local communities make welcoming stops, with food, drink and rest places for the walking pilgrims. This is one such place. The flag is the black mourning flag for Ashura. We stopped on our car journey to Shush and were welcomed very warmly, even invited home for meals. The people in Iran are the most friendly, open and hospitable I have met anywhere.

Jean-luc Drouin, , Ernest CH, Thérèse and 22 other people have particularly liked this photo

It's nice that you have had such positive experiences. I have also experienced the same during my numerous travels all over the world. It's only when you've experienced people yourself that you can make a judgement ...

Wonderful to read you have found such extraordinary hospitality. Unfortunately, it is not a matter of course everywhere.

An interesting scene and the setting reminds me of the Hay Plain, Diane. I've also found in my travels that the local people, outside the main tourist areas, are usually very friendly.
