I've seen reports that Madagascar is rapidly losing habitat for these and its other rare animals. It sounds similar to Haiti, except that Haiti didn't have many rare species (that we know of!).

It is and has been losing habitat. It is the fourth biggest island in the world...very large...but has 23 million people. It is also achingly poor...number 168 of 186 countries on the UN development index. Like Australia, much of its western land is arid and unproductive. The govt has declared large areas as protected land, and there are quite significant populations of wildlife in those protected areas. One other major threat is a poisonous Asian toad which has come in somehow and is breeding like lightning and killing off many of the unique reptiles and amphibians.
