The barge arrives

The barge arrives
Far from my Norway series, in the past few days the "big event" for our little town was the arrival of a 3300 tonne barge which will assist with the construction of a large new concrete bridge to replace our current lifting bridge, AFAIK the last such operating in Australia. The barge had to be brought across the Clyde River bar at high tide (about 0300 that day) then under the current bridge at first light. The barge is about half the size of a football field and had well below a metre of clearance from the pylons on either side! View large on black.

Explored.

Such excitement. Will the old bridge be preserved as it's part of the town's history?

Sadly, Amelia, the plan is to remove it once the new bridge is finished in 2023. I know many here would like it to stay, but I guess it would need ongoing conservation (rust and crumbling concrete).

That's some barge, George, and I agree with the others that it would be nice if the old bridge could be preserved. Great photo.

A fantastic blue hour photo! It seems such a shame that this extraordinary bridge won't be preserved.

It will be a fascinating project to watch, even though you may feel nostalgic about the wonderful old bridge.

Many thanks, everyone, for your kind comments on this image. Things are moving along now the barge is in place (and since fitted with some very large cranes), so I shall have to do further updates as opportunity allows.
