Do you think that you have some pretty good lenses? Well, not many lenses would beat this one - it is the Fresnel lens that once graced the Montague Island lighthouse, before the new halogen lighting was installed. At a guess it stands 5 M high and the glass section used to float on a bowl of liquid mercury as it rotated. Now it sits in the tourist information office at Narooma, the nearest town to Montague Island. HFF and have a great weekend, everyone.

Oh my...this is just marvelous, George. It's positively WHIMPERIING for some macros of that amazing glass!! I'd be all over that thing...it's fantastic!! Thanks for the information too, totally fascinating to think about.

Thanks for your remarks about my thorny rose cane picture...it never occurred to me, until you mentioned it, that the image could be mistaken for an aerial shot! That's just amazing! And then I looked at it that way and could totally see what you meant. How cool is that?!

Thanks too for the link to your Antarctica picture...you sure did take a lovely set of images (I remember your series from a while back) and that one was super too. It was fun to see the reference to what you were thinking about and I can totally see it. Happy to provide a focusing issue for you, lol...it's fun to flip back and forth visually from what something actually is and what it seems like! :)

Good record of the lens. That was a LOT of mercury to have sitting around. Maybe it was the reason light keepers went mad, rather than loneliness?
