The lighting is excellent! In their native country the gum trees look beautiful, when used in forest plantations elsewhere I'm less enthusiastic.

I'm not wild about the appearance of plantations either, but they do at least take the pressure off native forests.

Nice. I hadn't realized that a gum tree and a eucalyptus were the same! Eucalyptus was imported into California decades ago as an ornamental, and has done well enough that in places it's now considered an invader weed(!).

Yes, in the right conditions they grow (sometimes too) well - I gather they're now introduced in many areas around the world.

They were planted in rows along roads in the Central Valley, as windbreaks, IIRC because they were fast-growing. They probably also thrived in the absence of their usual parasites! Now there are some stands of very large trees indeed. Next time I get over around Sacramento I'll try to get some pix.

o0o I had forgotten the other name for this tree ... gum tree .... ;-)
and my how they grow tall ... we are starting to see them here
in the UK .... but they have a tendency to split .... and right now
start of summer ... strange, they are starting to shed leaves ...
perhaps they do this naturally ... I don't know ... perhaps we
need some Koala Bears ;-) o0o

Some species grow higher than others, Bev - but the tallest flowering plants in the world are gums that have been measured over 300 ft (in Tasmania).
