Hinton St Mary Church.

Hinton St Mary Church.
St Peter's Church ~ A Medieval Church was established on the site of the present Church in the 12th century. At that time Hinton St. Mary was a Lay Brothers settlement belonging to the Abbey of St. Mary in Shaftesbury. The dissolution of the monasteries around 1535 marked the end of Shaftesbury Abbey. At this time, in addition to the Church, there were three main buildings and the Manor House was subsequently built on the site of a dormitory.

You have so many attractive looking churches in your part of the country...............and this one is no exception. I especially like the lantern and the ornate gates.

The image in the PiP is lovely. I can't see them too clearly at this size but I like the elegant shaped birds at each side of the entrance. Herons maybe?

I like the smaller village churches the best Keith. I wasn't sure if the birds on the gate posts were herons or storks, but I have tried to find out the significance before, with no luck. The gatehouse is a holiday let and I think it is owned by Alice Plunkett, the racing commentator.

Thank you for your kind comments. Have a happy sunny Thursday.

I love the contrast in shapes between the arched gate and the square tower, Rosa. The ornate lamp is very impressive. The architecture is equally attractive in both photographs. Cheers, Joe

Thank you very much for your kind comments Joe. Part of the Manor house is behind the church and I had hoped to get them both in a picture, but they had scaffolding up! Cheers, Rosa.

Thank you very much Jose Manuel. I don't know the significance of the herons. I am trying to find out. It is always a quiet place to sit and reflect.

Beautiful entrances in these well composed and lovely images Rosa, I like the colours of what I assume is Ham stone, Timless Somerset!

A fine pair of compositions Rosa. The one looking through the gate towards the church is really very good, the PiP is equally so. I like the two large birds (Herons?) guarding the gates to the beautiful buildings beyond.

Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Doug Shepherd club
Thank you very much for your kind comments Doug. I think the birds are herons, but I don't know the connection. I have tried to find out, but drawn a blank so far.

Take care and have a good new week.
