Judge Wyndham's Oak ~ Silton
I have added 5 PiP's including the notiice board. For anyone who wishes to translate it, this is what it says.
Judge Wyndham's Oak. One of the oldest and largest Oak Trees in UK. This mighty Oak could be more than 1,000 years old, no-one really knows. One theory is that this tree was a boundary marker for the Royal Forest at Gillingham, which is why it survives. The Oak is a bit of a celebrity among trees with visitors from all over UK and Europe. Between here and the church is a small Oak grown from an acorn of this tree. Judge Wyndham, 1602-1684, was a Judge to Charles I, Charles II and Oliver Cromwell. He was one of the Fire Judges who presided over the courts after the Great Fire of London. His home was in Silton and the story goes he liked to sit under this tree. He died in Norwich while working as a Circuit Judge and his body was brought home to Silton where he is buried with a grand monument which dominates the church.

It would be such a shame if they just left this to rot away and die.........surely there must be ways of shoring it up and protecting it. I've seen pictures of trees with huge holes in the trunk that have been filled with concrete or even bricked up.
Rosalyn Hilborne club has replied to Keith Burton clubThe oak is being propped up in a couple of strategic places. It still looks full of life to me. A good job it's in quite a remote place.
