Three-toed Box Tortoise (m) (USA = ' Turtle ' ) Terrapene carolina triunguis

Three-toed Box Tortoise (m) (USA = ' Turtle ' ) Terrapene carolina triunguis
He was in top rate condition too. Nice weight.. clean skin and undamaged shell and full grown at about 6 inches long.

This is the sort of land they inhabit..woodland and undistrurbed but I have only seen a couple before.. both females.

Fred Fouarge, Annalia S., Xata, Rainer Blankermann and 34 other people have particularly liked this photo

Great shot!
Seems to me like they get a little bigger down here and some of us call them gophers for some unknown reason.

Thankyou Dick...

It depends on the breed... these are about maxed out at around 6-7 inches.

I have heard "Gopher" Tortoise used as a nickname .

What a beauty. I have never seen this sub-species. Mostly here in Mississippi are the Eastern (T.c. carolina and Florida T.c.bauri). My dogs catch them and bring them home frequently. Usually I distract the dogs before the turtles are seriously injured. By the way, Wikipedia says they are not tortoises: "Although box turtles are superficially similar to tortoises in terrestrial habits and overall appearance, they are actually members of the American pond turtle family (Emydidae)."

Thankyou Ron !

What is different is English and American terminology though ! I am English.. living in America.. and still speak English English.. not American English !

Haha! We know which is which, but we only say tortoise when there's a naturalist or a biologist nearby.
