Hampshire County Sheriff Robert J. Garvey
Smith College commencement exercises have always been declared open and closed by the sheriff of Hampshire County. Sheriff John Boyle, who died in 1984, did the honors when we were students. The current sheriff, Robert J. Garvey, is retiring after 30 years of service, so this is his last commencement.

He's been sheriff for 32 years, and will retire at the age of 78. The previous sheriff died in office, so I reckon Sheriff Garvey doesn't want to go out that way.
