Great story there Martha, you and your dog made that kids day. I didn't know Lassie made it around the world, I thought is was just an American thing. I learn so much from ipernity than just photography.

The first edition of the book in Polish is dated on 1958.
So I can say that it was with me around the time when my Dad taught me how to read.
It still is (somewhere in my house, among hundreds of other books that I can't part with).

And, oh, just yesterday we had another encounter with a first-grader (accompanied by his Mom) who was walking their dog at Glinianki (our town park, still undergoing revitalization, ugh!).
It was a very nice boy who started with a polite greeting "dzień dobry" and when I responded to it he asked if my dog was a girl or a boy (an old lady, I said, but still a girl). The boy said: good, she looks very like Lassie :)
