Terracotta Squat Lekythos Attributed to the Washing Painter in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, February 2012

Terracotta squat lekythos (oil flask)
Attributed to the Washing Painter
Period: Classical
Date: ca. 430–420 B.C.
Culture: Greek, Attic
Medium: Terracotta; red-figure
Dimensions: H.: 9 1/4 x 6 1/8 in. (23.5 x 15.6 cm)
Classification: Vases
Credit Line: Gift of Samuel G. Ward, 1875
Accession Number: 75.2.14
Description:
Youth and woman
A young man in travel attire—a petasos (broad-brimmed hat) and a cloak—stands before a woman who holds up a wreath. As the youth is also shown with a wreath, we may infer that the painter has combined two successive moments in one picture.
