Marble Pilaster Illustrating Jonah and the Whale (?) in the Church of Santa Caterina in Palermo, March 2005
Warning: the translation from Italian to English is my own and might have some errors in it! :)
St. Catherine's Church is located in the historic center of Palermo.
It faces two piazzas: the first is Piazza Pretoria, where one finds the fountain with the same name, while the second is Piazza Bellina, where you can visit the churches of La Martorana and San Cataldo.
St. Catherine's Church was originally next to a convent founded by the Dominican nuns in the 1300s. The Church was begun in 1566 and was completed in 1596. The dome and the choir, respectively date to the middle of the 1700s and 1863.
That the church is lavishly decorated on the interior, with a a single nave, is typical of the Counter-reformation. The plan allowed the nuns to participate in the liturgical rites from the choir, but not to be seen, because of the arrangement of the two columns at the entrance. The internal decoration, like many other Palermitan churches, ranges from colored marbles, stuccoes, and paintings, melded together into a single space, with architectural embellishments. Two of the painters who decorated the church were Filippo Randazzo and Vito D'Anna.
In Italiano:
