Title: Portrait of a Man with a Rosary

Date: probably 1508–9

Medium: Oil on wood

Dimensions: 18 3/4 x 13 7/8 in. (47.6 x 35.2 cm)

Classification: Paintings

Credit Line: H. O. Havemeyer Collection, Bequest of Mrs. H. O. Havemeyer, 1929

Accession Number: 29.100.24

Gallery Label:

This portrait and a portrait of a young woman in prayer (Kunsthaus, Zurich) probably formed the wings of a devotional triptych. Both date from from Cranach's visit to the Netherlands in 1508–09. The coat of arms on the ring of the sitter in the present portrait, apparently that of the Dutch families of Six van Hillegom and Six van Oterleek, support this view.
